How to Split a Video Track From Audio

In the Create editor, you can cut a video, audio, image and other clip in two by using the scissor icon in the top left of the timeline, or by clicking the S key on your keyboard. See below for a step by step guide with images.

___________

How to split a video, image or audio clip

First, start a Create project and add your video, image or audio file to the project's media library. Then:

1. Drag and drop the video into the timeline

If it's not already there, drag and drop the video, image or audio from the media library into the timeline at the bottom of your project.

2. Select the clip you want to split

Click on the clip in the timeline to select it (it will be outlined in colour when selected).

3. Position the scrubber where you want to split your clip

Drag the scrubber (the white vertical line with a circle on top) to where you want to split the clip.

NOTE: you can use the timecode displayed at the top of the timeline as a guide if you want to split your video at a precise time, e.g. 01:30:00 (1min 30 seconds)

4. Click the scissors icon

Click the scissors icon in the top left hand menu bar of the timeline. Or alternatively, hit the S key on your keyboard.

If you've selected a video clip, this will split the video in two, like this:

If you've selected an audio clip, it will split the audio clip in two, like this:

You can now select and move both parts of the clip separately, or delete one part (see below for how to delete clips).

___________

Splitting multiple clips at the same time

If you want to split every clip beneath the white scrubber, e.g. the clips on both the audio and video tracks, follow the process above, but don't select any clips before clicking split (to ensure no clips are selected you can click away in the black part of the timeline).

Now when you click the scissor icon, or hit the S key, all of the clips in all of the tracks beneath the scrubber will be split:

___________

Deleting part of a split clip

If you'd like to delete part of a split clip, click on it and then click the trash icon.

The selected clip will be deleted.

____________

How is splitting different to trimming and cropping?

Trimming a clip allows you to drag the edge of a clip left or right to shorten it or lengthen it. However, you can also 'trim' a clip by splitting it and then deleting the remaining part as shown above. To learn how to trim a clip, see: trimming a video, audio or image clip.

Cropping a clip allows you remove unwanted edges or black bars you see in the frame of a video to "zoom in" on it. It is different to splitting, which involves cutting a clip in two. To learn how to crop a video, see: cropping videos or images.
